About Deputy Deputy Devin Mason

Darlington County Sheriff's Office

Years of Service: 3 months

Deputy Devin Mason, 27, served the Darlington County community with honor, courage, and unwavering dedication. A graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (March 28, 2025), he joined the Sheriff's Office in 2024 and had just completed his field training when he was tragically ambushed and killed in the line of duty on July 1, 2025. Responding to serve warrants, Deputy Mason entered a home on Old Timers Court near Lamar alongside a fellow deputy. He was mortally wounded during the ambush; his partner survived with injuries. The suspect, who was prohibited from owning a firearm, was also killed, and a second individual was arrested. Known for his integrity, professionalism, and kind spirit, Deputy Mason is remembered by colleagues, community members, and neighbors as a man who served "with heart and honor." He leaves behind his fiancé, their two-month-old son, his mother, and stepfather. His sacrifice marked the first line-of-duty death in South Carolina in over three years.
